Everything you dream about for a wellness holiday in Bali: a beautiful retreat in a river valley, a huge bath alongside a river, an outdoor shower in a private garden, a restaurant serving delicious vegan food, and a spa offering massages and cleansing treatments.
Fivelements is a 15-minute drive from the popular tourist town of Ubud, but it’s the hotel’s immediate environment that makes it special. The wellness retreat is situated in a valley along the banks of the sacred Ayung River, onto which each of the suites faces. The retreat is quiet, tucked under the canopy of the jungle and the buildings – the suites, spa, restaurant and the yoga space – are surrounded by ponds and carefully tended tropical gardens.
Address: Mambal, Abiansemal, Badung Regency, Bali 80352, Indonesia.
Style & character
The boutique retreat is completely natural in style and the open design of the beautiful organic-shape bamboo restaurant, as well as large glass doors of each suite, allow for a seamless transition between the interiors and the peaceful gardens. With the bamboo and thatch buildings, open-air stonewall bathrooms and wide wooden decks, there is a wonderful sense of space, and a close connection to nature.
Service & facilities
Fivelements was created as a wellness sanctuary, and the facilities here – including a healing pool, beauty sanctuary and laboratory (where traditional home-made treatments are created) – are superb. The dreamy rooms in the Healing Village open to a jungle valley, and yet maintain their privacy. The staff, carefully chosen for their healing and wellness skills, are exceptionally discreet and treat guests like royalty.
There are nine suites at Fivelements, all of which front the Ayung River and a lush jungle valley. The luxurious suites, which you reach via bridges, stepping stones and almost-secret garden paths, have glass walls and a high thatched roof, which give a wonderful sense of space. The furniture and soft furnishings are locally crafted and have been carefully chosen to enhance the natural feel of the space, and to blur the lines between indoors and outdoors.
The large bathroom is open air, so you’ll shower under the stars in your own garden. Each suite is wrapped in a bamboo screen and fronted by a wooden deck, into which an enormous rock bath is sunk.
Food & drink
Fivelements’ dining area, the Sakti Dining Room, is situated in an organic shaped bamboo structure, with different levels that drop into the river valley. Although meals aren’t included, cuisine is a big part of a stay at Fivelements and the food served at the restaurant is perfectly aligned with the philosophies of the hotel: everything served here is very carefully prepared from only the finest organic ingredients.
The vegan restaurant is known for its “raw vegan living foods cuisine” and along with seasonal gourmet dishes there is a wide selection of juices, which are good for guests who are detoxing. No alcohol or meat is served here, and the food is free of sugar.
Access for guests with disabilities?
The suites have access for guests who are in wheelchairs, as do the restaurant (and its bathroom) and the mandalas, which are multi-functional bamboo spaces.
Fivelements is a family-friendly resort. As well as a special children’s menu, they offer treatments for children at the spa (including chocolate body treatments). There are wide spaces in which children can play, and babysitters can be arranged. Stays for children age 12 and under are complimentary when sharing a bed with an adult.
