Facing a particularly attractive stretch of beach and offering stunning sunset views, Kupu Kupu Phangan Beach Villas & Spa is a delightful collection of Balinese-style beach villas in a tropical garden. This resort is the best choice for couples and honeymooners who love private atmosphere when most of the lavish villas have their own pools.
Located in Nai Wok, a beautiful beach on Koh Phangan’s quiet west coast, a few minutes by motorbike or taxi to Thong Sala, the island’s capital: Kupu could hardly be better placed for visitors who want to stay away from the parties. A tiny rock island 50 metres offshore is a great place to enjoy the sunset. The water can be shallow here and guests might have to wade quite a bit at low tide before they can swim.
Address: 69/13 Moo 4 Naiwok, Koh Phangan, 84280, Thailand.
Style & character
Kupu Kupu performs an architectural feat by transplanting a Balinese-style resort to Thailand. But both the beach and garden villas with high gabled roofs look eclectic rather than incongruous in a luscious tropical garden and provide a change from the usual Thai beach resort aesthetics. The villas are arranged along a rectangular pool that’s great for a swim when the tide is out and the sea is too shallow. The pool is lined by a series of salas, perfect for an afternoon snooze.
Service & facilities
Service is prompt and very friendly. Facilities are simple but entirely adequate for a relaxed beach holiday. On the beach, kayaks are provided free of charge. Guests can book a three-hour snorkelling cruise and a two-hour sunset cruise on the resort’s boat. Thai cooking classes are also on offer. The atmospheric spa has just two treatment rooms and operates in conjunction with L’Occitane. The view from the terrace in front, complete with pavilions set in its own small pool, is striking. There’s also a small gym.

The lavish villas and (just two) suites, most with private pools, are a tropical dream, even if they stand a little close together. High ceilings, dark wood walls and furniture to match from Bali, along with great lighting and giant four-poster beds with mosquito nets, may tempt guests to forego the beach and linger. All the usual amenities – air conditioning, safe, coffee machine, two small desks and a comfortable seating area – complete a very handsome picture.
The spotless bathrooms with shower and a gorgeous free-standing marble tub compliment the quiet, elegant luxury of the rooms.
Food & drink
The restaurant serves a fair selection of Western, Japanese, Balinese and Thai cuisine and is a cut above most of the dining options on the island. Seafood barbecue nights are popular with walk-ins too. The breakfast buffet is not spectacular, but certainly sufficient, with the usual English options, fruits and cereals. The juices aren’t fresh. Guests may book romantic dinners for two in one of the salas by the pool or in a gazebo on the beach.
Access for guests with disabilities?
Kupu Kupu is a resort designed for adults, though there’s one dedicated family villa. Extra beds and cots can be put into the pool villas. Children enjoy their own menu in the restaurant and at the spa.
