La Comtesse Paris

72

Everyone is a countess at La Comtesse. This is a relaxed boutique address with sensational Eiffel Tower views from every room in the 19th-century house. Décor evokes the literary salons of 18th-century Paris and the hotel café and salon de thé serves all-day coffee, cakes and light meals.

Location

In an 1870 townhouse on a reasonably busy road in the posh 7e arrondissement, within a stone’s throw of Mademoiselle Eiffel herself and a 10-minute walk from the wonderful Musée Rodin where Auguste Rodin’s pensive figure The Thinker (1902) holds sentry in the art museum’s romantic sculpture-peppered gardens.

The École Militaire metro station (line 8) is right next door and La Motte-Picquet Grenelle (lines 6, 8 and 10) in the neighboring 15e arrondissement is 10 minutes by foot along Ave de la Motte-Picquet.

Style & character

As with all the boutique Parisian properties in the highly recommended Elegancia Hotels portfolio, The Countess is stylish without trying too hard. It looks to the literary salons of 18th-century Paris for inspiration and it’s not difficult to imagine flouncy-robed countesses and other bourgeois intellectuals of the day hobnobbing over silver teapots of thick chocolat chaud (or something stronger) and biscuits. That said, you don’t need a posh frock to stay here.

Service & facilities

Despite its four stars, La Comtesse feels very mid-range. Service is warm and informal, and the hotel café with bijou street terrace – open to non-guests too – provides a delightful vitrine on daily life in Paris.

Guests can browse art books in one of two neo-boudoir lounges: think ribboned parchments, gild-framed vignettes of 18th-century women and comfortable armchairs.

A steam room and small fitness room is squirrelled away in the basement. Laundry, complimentary newspapers and concierge service, too.

Rooms

The 40 floors stack up on six floors – and every single one has an Eiffel Tower view. Colour palettes are white with a flash of colour – sky blue, mandarin, pistachio or taupe. USB jacks and Bluetooth-connected television continue the contemporary theme and all-white bathrooms sport rain showers and heavenly scented Fragonard products.

The Royal suite has a fantastic two-metre-long bathtub for two. Kudos for the fun, fuchsia-pink feather plume biro on each desk and minibars stocked with local Parisian craft beer, artisan juices and other French drinks. Courtesy tray with kettle, tea and coffee is tucked away in generously sized cupboards; pricier Duchesse and Comtesse doubles have coffee machines.

Food & drink

Breakfast is served in the neo-boudoir Café La Comtesse, with an evocative faux-18th-century ceiling painting and quintessential street terrace. The Express petit dejeuner includes tea or coffee, juice and choice of three delicious homemade cakes, breads and pastries; while the American breakfast includes made-to-order eggs and a self-service feast of fruit, yoghurts, cold meats, cheese, salads etc.

Lunch and dinner offer a moreish choice of savoury tarts and salads, omelets and gourmet croque-monsieur (toasted cheese and ham sandwiches). In between, indulge on sweet macarons, exquisite cakes by Mathieu et Pauline and artisanal ice cream by Parisian glacier Martine Lambert.
